Koeth, Rice & Leo Co. L.P.A., and its predecessor firms have practiced law in the Northeastern Ohio area since 1919. Richard M. Bertsch, one of our founding partners, began his practice of insurance defense law in 1955. Since that time, the firm has devoted a significant percentage of its practice to personal injury claims and other insurance-related litigation. In addition to serving insurance companies and their insured throughout Northern Ohio, we also maintain an active practice in construction, commercial, and real estate litigation.
Our practice is located in the historic Warehouse District of Cleveland, Ohio, directly across the street from the Justice Center. We purchased and renovated our building in 1985, a testament to our commitment to providing quality legal services for Cuyahoga County and beyond.

The strength of our firm has always been our commitment to clients, many of whom have been with us for decades. Our primary goal has always been to provide clients with the best possible legal advice in a cost-effective manner:
- Our three partners have each practiced for over twenty-five years. Clients receive personal attention from an experienced trial lawyer throughout the case, rather than being passed off to a less experienced associate or paralegal.
- We are not interested in quick settlement, nor are we overeager to litigate. In close consultation with clients, we weigh the potential exposure to large damage awards at trial against the costs of settling the case. At trial, we are thoroughly prepared and aggressive.

Our insurance defense practice has won verdicts and negotiated favorable settlements in personal injury claims, product liability, premises liability, toxic torts, and intentional torts. Experienced Trial Attorneys
Our ties to Northeastern Ohio are evident in the backgrounds of our dedicated and proven attorneys. Mr. Koeth and Mr. Rice were assistant Cuyahoga County prosecutors before entering private practice. All four of our lawyers were born in Cleveland and each earned their J.D. at Cleveland-Marshal College of Law. They are as committed to their profession as they are to the community, and are actively involved in many attorney organizations.
- Robert J. Koeth has practiced since 1982. His practice concentrates on product liability, premises liability, construction law, and commercial litigation, as well as environmental and asbestos litigation.
- Clark D. Rice was admitted to the bar in 1980. His core practice areas are construction litigation, premises liability, personal injury claims, commercial litigation, and employment-related matters.
- Ann E. Leo has practiced since 1979. Her focus is complex insurance coverage issues, declaratory judgment issues, bad faith litigation, commercial litigation, and appellate work.
- Shawn W. Schlesinger has practiced in Ohio since 1998. He is part of the firm’s litigation team, and is building a reputation of his own in casualty claims, product liability, premises liability, toxic torts, insurance coverage litigation, and commercial litigation.
